Dental Crowns

Dental crownA dental crown is a way to replace a tooth for function or cosmetic reasons. The Center for Family & Implant Dentistry in Kingsport and Bluff City offers dental crown procedures for our patients to restore the look and function of their smiles.

Dental Crown Placement

The first step for a dental crown is often for the dentist to remove any decay. Sometimes, a large area of a tooth has to be taken off. After Dr. MacConnell has removed the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth, he will reshape the top of the tooth to make it smooth and smaller.

An impression is then made of the smoothed-over tooth so that a crown will be made that will be a good fit for the tooth. In some cases, you may need to wear a temporary crown while your permanent crown is being made. Today, this is most often unnecessary, as there is a new way of creating the permanent crown on the same day and during the same visit to the dentist.

One-Visit Crowns

In the past, getting a crown always required that you wear a temporary crown for a few weeks and then come back and have that crown removed and the permanent crown put in place. It was common for adjustments to be needed to the crown to make it fit well and be comfortable.

Today, the Center for Family & Implant Dentistry has the CEREC one-visit crown system to make crowns. This system allows for the damaged area of the tooth to be removed and the permanent crown created and fitted all in one dentist appointment. This is a highly convenient way to get a new crown, and it’s all done while you wait in the office comfortably.

The CEREC one-visit crown system works with extreme precision so that it’s rare to need any adjustments. Dr. MacConnel readies the tooth for the crown, and then you simply wait for the permanent crown to be made right here in the office. It often takes under an hour to have the crown made, and then it can be placed over the natural tooth.

Crowns are crafted from tooth-colored material and made to be the precise color of your other teeth so that it fits in with them perfectly. These crowns look good and are highly functional.
