Implant-Support Dentures

dental implantSometimes called overdentures, implant-supported dentures are a great choice for those who have specific wants and needs for tooth replacement options. When teeth are lost, it’s important to replace them so that you can chew and talk better, and many people like the way these dentures look.

The Center for Family & Implant Dentistry loves to see our patients with full, bright smiles. Dr. MacConnell and our skilled team offer multiple options for tooth restoration, including implant-supported dentures.

Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures

At least two dental implants are needed to hold onto implant-supported dentures. The implants are posts made from titanium and placed into the bone in the jaw. The overdentures are held in place by those implants, allowing the overdentures to snap into place for a permanent solution. If they are removed, it is only by the dentist.

Many people like these dentures because they don’t have to be removed each night for cleaning. They don’t come with the kind of slippage that conventional dentures do, and they are stronger and have better functionality.

Wearing this kind of denture allows patients to get highly effective support as well as a prosthesis that is tough and strong. This type of denture is also considered by many to be more comfortable. There is no need to use a fixative to keep the dentures in place. Dr. MacConnell snaps them into place, where they stay unless the dentist needs to take them out.

What To Expect When Getting Implant-Supported Dentures

Getting implant-supported dentures requires several stages to complete.

Our dentist will implant at least two posts into your jaw during oral surgery. You will be asleep with sedation so that you are always comfortable. After this step, the tissues have to be given some time to heal, usually a few months.

While the implants heal, they will fuse themselves with the bone in the jaw. During this time, your temporary dentures are made so that you can wear them during the healing stage.

After the areas have healed and the new dentures are created, they are snapped into place over the implants.

Dentures That Look Like Your Natural Teeth

These dentures look like your teeth, and no one has to know that they are dentures. They will also work just like your original teeth. They are made to look realistic and are made in a color matching your natural teeth. Patients are happy with how they can use their teeth as they once did.

Some patients choose to get this type of denture because it doesn’t require much care beyond brushing them as you would your natural teeth. Since these dentures are permanent, they don’t have to be put or taken out every day. They won’t slip, and it’s great to be able to smile and know that your teeth look great. They are stronger than conventional dentures, and they work for a broad range of patients with missing teeth.
