Extractions

Woman SmileWhen a patient gets one of their teeth removed, this is called an extraction. This is a common type of dental surgery that Dr. MacConnell can perform right here in our Bluff City and Kingsport offices.

The Center for Family & Implant Dentistry provides a comfortable environment and a skilled team to help you through any dental procedure you may require, including tooth extractions and restorative oral implants.

Why Are Tooth Extractions Needed?

Patients may need to have a tooth extraction for a variety of reasons. Some of these include:

  • Severe periodontal disease (gum disease)
  • Broken tooth
  • Impacted tooth
  • Prepare for orthodontic treatment
  • Severe cavities
  • Infection
  • Wisdom teeth overcrowding
  • Trauma to the jaw bone
  • Delayed baby tooth eruption

Do You Need to Have a Tooth Removed?

Our dentist performs tooth extractions with the latest techniques and up-to-date equipment for a high-tech approach to your teeth. When you get a tooth extracted, you will first have the area numbed to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Sedation options may be available for those with worry or anxiety over their procedure.

Before you get a tooth extracted, the dentist will consult with you, check your medical history, and ask about any medications you take. Some medications have to be stopped before the extraction can be performed. In some cases, the dentist will prescribe a medication to be taken on the day of the surgery.

Tooth Extraction Types

The location of the tooth, its size, shape, and position will determine which type of extraction you need. There are generally two types. One of these is a simple extraction, and the other is a surgical extraction.

A simple extraction is often performed when the tooth is visible above the gums, and it can all be removed in one piece. Other cases require surgical removal of the tooth, including when gum tissue or bone must also be removed. Teeth that will be removed in pieces will also need a surgical technique.
